The mother in our host house was dressed beautifully, the schools take the day off, some businesses are closed, and the overall lull of holiday is in the air. We went to a local hotel that also has Wifi, and found every table ornately decorated with a centerpiece of faux roses and a heart balloon that would in the state be regarded as only appropriate for Valentine’s Day. Sadly after sitting down, we found out the internet was off in the hotel. We went to ask if it needed to be turned on (which is common in Nicaragua) and the clerk apologetically said, "No, it's not working, and because it's Mother's Day, it's not going to get fixed today." It was also obvious that people were eating a special dinner, as the people at the table nearby were using their camera phones to take a blurry picture of their meal. Here, Mother’s day in Nicaragua is not just a festival, but an entire holiday! One person even said, "Mother's Day is bigger than Christmas here!" ¡Feliz dia de las madres! - Tim
We were awakened by the sound of a car driving down the street with a loudspeaker blaring down the street. The first was just past midnight; the second through forth followed over the next hour and a half and the fifth and sixth around six am. What were they for? They were shouting, “Happy mother’s day Juana!” or “Happy Mother’s day to all the mothers! We’ve got a special event at our church today so come!” This is Mother’s Day in Nicaragua.
